Addiction

What is addiction to you, when does it occur?

I guess the simplest form of addiction is when you can’t give up something. This could be something like smoking, drinking, weed or other forms of drugs. But this could be something else like gambling, eating or even shopping.

There's nothing wrong with doing certain things in moderation but one thing you need to think about is the reasons why you are doing it.

Think about certain times you may drink, or take a drug, you're normally trying to get away from something, trying to get away from an emotion that you don't want to feel in that moment. This is important to remember because I feel like everyone will do it at some point in their lives.

I myself have struggled with drinking, particularly when I was at University. At the time my parents were going through divorce and my mum had admitted herself to rehab.

My mental health was, unknowingly unstable. I went to University not having much confidence and was slowly trying to make friends and socialise.

When I was out drinking I would over drink, emotions would get the best of me where I would either start fights, I would be crying, talking about the things I was struggling with, home and anything else I was holding back. During this period I also started smoking cigarettes, I did try weed but I didn’t have a great first experience so it’s not something I continued to do, even though my friends were.

If you are trying to stop an addiction, try and remember the reasons that you started it in the first place. Have you overcome those reasons and have you accepted the situation. I don’t think there is one answer for this as addiction starts and takes many forms, but I am talking around my personal opinions.
